SPECIALIST BURN SCAR TREATMENTS IN KENT
Understanding Burn Scars, & Helping You Explore Your Options
A burn scar is not simply a mark on the surface of the skin. Depending on the original injury, it can affect texture, colour, thickness, flexibility and sensation.
Send us a message about your scar and what you'd like to improve. Claire personally reads every enquiry and will reply to arrange a consultation time that suits you.
It may feel tight, itchy, sensitive, painful or numb. It may be raised or uneven. It may look very different from the surrounding skin, and for some people, a burn scar carries an emotional impact that cannot be seen from the outside.
At The Skin & Laser Studio, we take a specialist and highly individual approach to assessing fully healed burn scarring. With over 33 years of experience in skin and advanced treatments, Claire has developed a particular focus on complex scarring, including scars following burns and trauma.
We don't start with a machine.
We start with your scar - understanding what happened, how it healed, how it behaves today and what you would realistically like to improve.
Experience & Focus on Burn Scarring
Burn scars can behave very differently from other scars. The depth of the original burn, healing time, infection, surgery, skin grafting and the body's individual healing response can all influence the final scar.
Clients may seek advice about raised or thickened scars, uneven texture, tight or firm tissue, redness, darker or lighter pigmentation, altered sensation, older scars or scarring following skin grafts.
Our role is not to promise that a burn scar can be removed. It is to assess the scar in front of us and determine whether appropriate treatment may help improve particular aspects of its appearance or texture.
Every Burn Scar Is Different
Two people can experience similar burns and heal very differently. This is why we assess the history and current characteristics of the scar, including its age, healing journey, any grafting or surgery, thickness, texture, colour, sensation, location and whether movement is affected.
We then discuss what may, and may not, be realistically achievable.
Specific Concerns We Assess
-
Burn injuries can sometimes result in hypertrophic scarring, which may appear raised, firm, thickened or red. Raised scars require careful assessment. If we believe specialist medical burns or plastic-surgery management is more appropriate, we will advise you.
-
Some burn scars contract as they heal and mature. When this occurs near a joint, significant contracture can restrict movement.
If a scar affects mobility or function, medical, burns, plastic-surgery or rehabilitation assessment may be required. Aesthetic treatment is not a replacement for medical management. Your safety comes first. -
Burn scars may heal darker, lighter or redder than surrounding skin. These changes have different causes and should not all be treated in the same way. Texture, pigmentation and vascular redness may need separate consideration, and some concerns may not be suitable for treatment within our clinic.
-
Fractional Radiofrequency may be considered for certain fully healed burn scars where improving aspects of texture and skin quality is an appropriate goal.
It combines fine microneedles with controlled radiofrequency energy to encourage a targeted healing and collagen-remodelling response. Burn scars are complex, however, and Fractional RF is not appropriate for every scar. Suitability depends on the individual scar, skin and medical history. -
A burn scar is not automatically too old to assess. We see people who have lived with scars for many years, including scars dating back to childhood.
The question is not simply 'How old is the scar?' but 'What does the scar look and feel like today, and what are you hoping to improve?' -
Grafted skin and the surrounding scar tissue can behave differently from uninjured skin. Some fully healed graft-related scars may be appropriate for assessment, while others require specialist medical management.
Please tell us about all grafting, reconstructive surgery and previous treatment during consultation.
A Human Approach
You may have lived with your burn scar for years. You may have undergone operations, grafting or previous treatments. You may have been told that nothing more can be done, or you may simply want to understand whether you have options.
You will never be made to feel that you need to hide your scar or that there is something wrong with it. Treatment is your choice. Our role is to give you honest, professional information and help you make an informed decision.
Your Burn Scar Consultation
We assess the scar, listen to its history and discuss what concerns you most. We then explain whether treatment may be appropriate, what improvement may realistically be possible, potential treatment options, likely timescales, downtime and aftercare.
If medical or specialist assessment should come first, we will tell you.
Send us a message about your scar and what you'd like to improve.
Claire personally reads every enquiry and will reply to arrange a consultation time that suits you.
Frequently Asked Questions

-
Burn scars may become less noticeable as they mature, but they do not usually disappear completely. The outcome depends on the depth of injury, healing process and individual scar response.
-
No treatment can guarantee complete removal. Suitable treatments may improve particular characteristics such as texture or overall appearance.
-
Potentially. Age is only one factor. We assess texture, thickness, colour, location, maturity and your treatment goal.
-
Some long-established scars may still be suitable for assessment. We look at the scar as it is now rather than assuming it is too old.
-
Deep burn scarring can be complex and may involve grafting, contracture and structural change. Fully healed scars can be assessed, but specialist medical input may be appropriate depending on the case.
-
There is no single best treatment. Burn scars may involve texture, colour, redness, raised tissue and contracture. The approach must be individual.
-
Scar maturation can continue for many months and sometimes around two years. Appearance and sensation may change during this period.
-
Excess collagen production can lead to hypertrophic scarring. Raised scars should be assessed before treatment.
-
Scar tissue can contract during maturation. If tightness restricts movement, specialist medical assessment is important.
-
Itching can occur during scar healing and maturation. Severe or persistent symptoms should be discussed with an appropriate healthcare professional.
-
Burn scars can have altered sensation. Persistent, new or worsening pain should be medically assessed.
-
Burn injuries can affect nerves in the skin and cause altered or reduced sensation. New or concerning neurological symptoms should be medically assessed.
-
Redness may persist during scar maturation. We can assess fully healed scars and discuss whether treatment is appropriate.
-
Inflammation can cause increased pigmentation. Pigmentation differs from structural scarring and may require a different approach.
-
Pale scars may have reduced pigment. Hypopigmentation can be challenging to treat, and we will be realistic about what may be achievable.
-
Most major maturation occurs earlier in healing, but scars may appear or feel different over time. Significant new changes in an established scar should be medically assessed.
-
Some fully healed graft-related scars may be suitable for assessment, while others may not. Grafted skin requires careful consideration and sometimes specialist medical input.
-
It may be considered for certain fully healed burn scars when texture and skin quality are appropriate treatment goals. It is not suitable for every burn scar.
-
This depends on the cause and severity. Significant contracture or restricted movement requires medical or specialist assessment; aesthetic treatment is not a substitute for this.
-
Some advanced procedures require strict sun avoidance before and after treatment. Timing depends on the treatment, skin type and lifestyle.
-
There is no universal number. Complex scars often require a course of treatment with appropriate healing intervals.
-
Sensation varies because burn scars may be more sensitive, less sensitive or numb. We explain what to expect before treatment.
-
The skin must be fully healed before advanced aesthetic treatment is considered. Timing depends on the injury, healing, grafting, surgery and ongoing medical care.
-
You may still choose to have the scar assessed to understand it as it is today. We cannot promise treatment will be possible, but we can give an honest opinion about whether there are appropriate options.
-
Cost depends on the scar, size of the area, treatment approach and likely number of sessions. We explain recommendations and costs following assessment.
-
No. Burn scars are complex and individual responses vary. We provide realistic expectations and will not promise a result that cannot be guaranteed.
